Enhanced selectivity to olefins in the hydrodechlorination of trichloromethane using Ag-Pd on activated carbon catalysts

Two Ag-Pd (nominal 1 % wt each) bimetallic catalysts supported on commercial activated carbon were synthesized and tested, for the first time, in hydrodechlorination (HDC) of trichloromethane (TCM) to obtain light olefins. different Pd precursors used, PdCl2 Pd(NO3)2, being resulting denoted as AgPdCl/C AgPdN/C, respectively. A monometallic Ag catalyst was also prepared comparison purposes. The two led metal particle sizes zerovalent electrodeficient ratios. showed a poor dechlorination, contrast with ones. AgPdN/C yielded high selectivity paraffins, while more selective olefins (mostly ethylene), desired reaction products. This better behavior terms ethylene propylene probably due existence smaller nanoparticles sites. These sites are active conversion chloromethanes into unsaturated hydrocarbons, larger clusters present higher hydrogenation ability. allowed complete TCM conversion, overall dechlorination outstanding 75 olefins, showing very stability at temperature 350 °C almost 35 h stream. results represent significant improvement respect those obtained reported our previous studies. To best knowledge, time it is such above indicated from HDC chloromethane.
